Michael Bauer built the first version of MapQuest as CEO of the Internet company he started in 1993, The Internet Group. In the beginning of his Internet career, Michael sold some of the very first Internet advertisements, deployed some of the first e-commerce sites, and developed some of the earliest Internet directories. Over the last 20 years, Michael has consulted for Tim O’Reilly on the Global Network Navigator, Niklas Zennstrom on Joltid (later Skype), and Perry Evans (first MapQuest, later Jabber). Michael has a particular expertise in the Local Internet, working for clients around the world (Dex, Sensis, Pages Jaunes, European Directories, and REA Group). His current company, Brilliant Arc, has developed a local ontology software-as-a-service ( Michael is an Internet product management expert with a United States Patent pending for a “Knowledge Based System and Method for Local Commerce.” Michael holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the state University system of Pennsylvania, a Master of Science in Computer Science from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Science in Industrial Administration (MBA) from Carnegie Mellon University.
